Plants, a trove of solutions that will help farming succeed in its mission to feed us.

Limagrain

BACKGROUND

Given the planet’s expanding population, meeting its food requirements is one of agriculture’s greatest challenges. We must produce more and produce better. But we face challenges: the accelerating impact of climate change (including weather events, viruses, parasites, etc.) and the growing strain on our natural resources. We also need to address the need for higher yields while adapting to evolving regulations, especially the planned reduction in the use of crop protection products.

Adapting crop varieties to farming ecosystems and regions

Visuel Limagrain

At Limagrain, we are convinced that plants still have the potential for countless solutions that will ensure a lasting future for agriculture, enabling it to continue providing adequate quantities of quality food.

We are a multi-crop seed company and channel our expertise into creating new, efficient, suitable seed varieties.

Our research work at Limagrain is designed to meet the expectations of both our direct and indirect clients. Field crop and vegetable growers want higher-yielding, virus-, disease- and pest-resistant varieties suited to their climate and soil. Manufacturers and distributors want produce that keeps well, is the right size, and is well suited to both manufacturing processes and the baking industry. Consumers want products that are tasty, appetizing, nutritious, traceable, visually appealing and good value for money.

Offering sustainable agri-food products, with greater nutritional benefits

At Limagrain, we also run bespoke plant breeding programs for our own cereal-food chain businesses which factor their needs into the value chain as early as possible.

For example, crops must meet agronomic and growing behavior criteria as well as technological requirements regarding quality or nutritional functionalities.

To feed nearly 10 billion people in 2050, global farming must produce food that is 60% more plentiful, 60% more nutritious, and 60% more diverse.

A digital transformation that serves more sustainable and efficient precision agriculture.

Our research process accounts for new, tech-driven changes in agronomic practices—especially digital solutions.

We focus in particular on precision agriculture, which uses data modeling to help farmers manage their operations. Our work also includes soil knowledge and protection, and biological control techniques.

Research, science and innovation are at the heart of what we do at Limagrain

Water stress affects more than 70% of grain corn acreage in Europe and can lead to yield losses of up to 80%. To combat this major problem, Limagrain Field Seeds has developed Hydraneo, a 360-degree solution that combines assessing field drought risks, breeding more drought-resistant crop varieties, and improving farming techniques (crop rotation, tillage, sowing dates, and fertilization).
